Activity budgets and activity rhythms in red ruffed lemurs (Varecia rubra) on the Masoala Peninsula, Madagascar: seasonality and reproductive energetics

Abstract: The activity budgets and daily activity rhythms of Varecia rubra were examined over an annual cycle according to season and reproductive stage. Given the relatively high reproductive costs and patchy food resources of this species, I predicted that V. rubra would 1) travel less and feed more during seasonal resource scarcity in an attempt to maintain energy balance, and 2) show sex differences in activity budgets due to differing reproductive investment. Contrary to the first prediction, V. rubra does not incr… Show more

“…Female offspring have been observed to affiliate with mothers during the birth season and to co-nurse offspring in captivity [Pereira et al, 1987[Pereira et al, , 1988White et al, 1992]. Alloparenting and co-nursing have also been observed in the wild between females of unknown relationship that could be mother-daughter pairs [Vasey, 2005[Vasey, , 2007. Male offspring also alloparent but daughters are presumably more helpful as supportive alloparents through allonursing.…”

“…First, the proportion of the number of behavioural records for each activity category represented was divided by the total number of activity records (Vasey, 2005). The behavioural records were used to calculate the time budgets for each day and then summed within each month to provide the overall wet and dry season (Di Fiore and Rodman, 2001;Di Fiore, 2003).…”

“…Our sighting of V. rubra along the Belampona River was approximately 10 km east of a previous sighting near the village of Sahavary (Simons and Lindsay 1987). Limited observations of Varecia during our survey were likely due to their rarity and sparse distribution on account of hunting and habitat disturbance, as well as their relative inactivity at this time of year (V. rubra, for example, spends more time resting [~60%] in June -September than at other times of the year [Vasey 2005; see also Morland 1993]). Early September is also a period of limited fruit availability for Varecia, when even their keystone fruit Canarium is unavailable (Vasey 2000).…”
