Activism among exceptional patients with cancer

Abstract: In this study, we found that activism was a major theme that was independently observed in both Israel and the U.S.A. This has implications for health care providers to facilitate patient engagement in the care and treatment of their disease. Further research on this phenomenon is needed.

“…Narrative research has emerged as an important area in medical anthropology as well as in hermeneutic phenomenology. In both the telling and the interpretation of experiences, narrative mediates between the inner world of thoughts and feelings and the outer world of actions (Frenkel et al, 2010; Green & Thorogood, 2009; Mattingly & Garro, 2000; Reissman, 2008). Illness narratives can also give detailed descriptions of a patient's experience over the course of an illness or treatment.…”

“…Active participation in treatment, such as choosing treatment options, seems to be another predictor of longer survival of cancer patients. 57 Homoeopathy, however, is thought to act on the whole organism, 31,58,59 that is, evenly on the nervous, hormonal and cellular systems. 60 Taken in whole, these data suggest a CAM-mediated or -modulated positive neuroimmunologic processes that may affect the growth and propagation of cancer.…”
