Active visfatin is elevated in serum of maintenance haemodialysis patients and correlates inversely with circulating HDL cholesterol

Abstract: Our study provides reliable data on active visfatin in HD patients using a well-characterized ELISA. Loss of renal function is accompanied by increased circulating active visfatin concentrations in our patients. Furthermore, decreased HDL cholesterol may hint at an increased probability of cardiovascular events in HD patients with elevated serum visfatin.

“…Various studies have been done on the relationship between Adipocytokines and lipid profiles in CKD and renal transplant recipients. Nusken et al, stated that active Visfatin in hemodialysis patients compared to those in the control group increased independent of blood glucose, serum insulin, diabetes, and HDL (26). Furthermore, in hemodialysis patients, only HDL and insulin-treated diabetes mellitus were independently associated with active serum Visfatin (26).…”

“…The age difference in the studied populations is a potential, although unlikely, explanation. Contradictory data with the ELISA method were also described, but only in dialysis patients [5,6]. In this specific population, the increased visfatin/NAMPT levels could result from factors other than kidney function, including severe inflammation and uremic milieu.…”

“…However, it is unknown whether kidney clearance of visfatin/NAMPT exists. In patients with end-stage chronic kidney disease (CKD), a significantly increased circulating visfatin/NAMPT level using a highly specific ELISA method was found [5,6]. It should be emphasized that hemodialysis patients in both studies were characterized by significant systemic inflammation and insulin resistance.…”
