Active Tectonics in the Kvarner Region (External Dinarides, Croatia)—An Alternative Approach Based on Focused Geological Mapping, 3D Seismological, and Shallow Seismic Imaging Data

Abstract: Active tectonics in long-lived orogenic belts usually manifests on the preexisting inherited structures. In the Kvarner region of the External Dinarides, an area with low-to-moderate seismicity related to the Adriatic microplate (Adria) northward movement, we deal with faults in predominantly carbonate rocks within tectonically complex NW-SE striking fold-and-thrust belt, which makes the identification and parametrization of the active structures challenging. Moreover, anthropogenic modifications greatly compl… Show more

“…High seismicity indicates active tectonic activity in recent times in the Kvarner area (MARKUŠIĆ et al, 2019;KORBAR et al, 2020). The northward displacement of the Istrian peninsula has been determined based on GPS measurements (WEBER et al, 2010).…”

“…Acoustic mapping techniques are commonly used for the determination of the geomorphology of the seabed, submerged karst relief, and river channels [30,[32][33][34]. Furthermore, with this method, we can detect stratigraphic evidence of past and recent seismic activity and identify displaced seismic horizons, folded and faulted reflectors, erosional bases, and zones of discontinuity [30,31,35]. The application of a single research method, such as the geophysical method, is insufficient for detailed One of the most widespread and successful research methods in the study of the Quaternary sediment successions is the application of acoustic mapping techniques using a sub-bottom profiler [29][30][31][32].…”
