Active Suspension Control of Full-Car Systems Without Function Approximation

Abstract: This paper proposes a new control approach for full-car active suspension systems with unknown nonlinearities. The main advantage of this approach is that the uncertainties and nonlinearities in the system can be handled without using any function approximator (e.g. neural networks (NNs), fuzzy logic systems (FLSs)), and the associated online adaptation. Hence, the heavy computational cost and sluggish learning phase to achieve convergence can be remedied. To maintain the transient and steady-state suspension … Show more

“…An alternative to passive suspension is the use of an active suspension system that uses extra actuators together with passive suspension elements (e.g., springs and dampers) to effectively dismiss forces from the road excitation [ 17 ]. This type of suspension is used more often in commercial vehicles to increase the car’s stability and ride comfort on uneven terrains and ongoing research focuses on suspension control to reduce cost and power consumption [ 18 ].…”

“…Compared to the time-triggered scheme [22,23], the eventtriggered control algorithm typically requires less information transmission. Motivated by this fact, the event-triggered controller has been used to the consensus control of multi-agent systems in [24][25][26][27][28][29][30]. The authors in [24] developed an adaptive event-triggered control protocol to realize consensus control of the first-order multi-agent systems subject to undirected graph.…”

“…However, the influence of pitch motion for the quarter vehicle model is not considered. It is worth specifying that the pitch behaviour of the suspension systems significantly affects the safety degree and comfort of riding, and then the researches for the pitch behaviour of half-car and full-car active suspension systems have been addressed as well as the vertical behaviour [10,11]. According to main coupling mechanical structures, car systems can be distinguished into three groups: passive driving suspension, semi-active driving suspension [12,9], and active driving suspension [11,13].…”
