Active structuring of colloidal armour on liquid drops

Abstract: Adsorption and assembly of colloidal particles at the surface of liquid droplets are at the base of particle-stabilized emulsions and templating. Here we report that electrohydrodynamic and electro-rheological effects in leaky-dielectric liquid drops can be used to structure and dynamically control colloidal particle assemblies at drop surfaces, including electric-field-assisted convective assembly of jammed colloidal ‘ribbons’, electro-rheological colloidal chains confined to a two-dimensional surface and spi… Show more

“…If the drop is not fully covered, Taylor electrohydrodynamic circulation flows in and around the drop would induce the formation of particle ribbons on the drop surface by convective deposition in the flow field [19,20,21]. Such flows are not observed around the fully armored drops studied here since the particle layer absorbsim the tangential electrostatic stresses.…”

“…Such a complex topological structure is bound to interfere with the mechanical response of the shell in a way that is still unclear. Understanding this point, however, is of utmost importance to control the deformation of many functionalized self-assembled materials (9,18,19). Numerical and theoretical approaches to date are typically based on solving the elasticity field between grain-boundary scars and deriving equilibrium particle configurations from the effective free energy of the interacting defects (15,(20)(21)(22)(23).…”
