Active SAR Antennas: Design, Development, and Current Programs

Abstract: The paper presents the design guidelines for Active SAR Antennas followed for the development of COSMO Sky Med SAR Antenna Subsystem. They have brought to define the antenna architecture, the RF, and electrical requirements for all the antenna RF, digital and power units, taking into account the available technologies and achievable performance. The antenna design is described for what the main subsystems is concerned, such as RF, power, digital, including mechanical and thermal aspects. Finally the paper repo… Show more

“…COSMO-SkyMed [11] (Constellation of small satellite for Mediterranean basin Observation) is the largest Italian investment in space systems for Earth Observation, funded by Italian Space Agency (ASI), Italian Ministry of Defense (MoD) and industry contribution (Alenia Spazio) with high-resolution capability. The system consists of a constellation of four low earth orbit (LEO) mid-sized satellites, each is equipped with a multi-mode high-resolution SAR operating at X band and fitted with particularly flexible and innovative data acquisition and transmission equipment.…”

“…The steering can be accomplished electronically (an electronically-steered array (ESA)) or mechanically (a gimbal-mounted antenna) [3,4]. CSX and TSX are strip-mapmode SARs with limited along-track, or azimuth, pointing capabilities utilizing their phasedarray antenna designs [5]. Their azimuth-pointing capabilities allow a higher spatial resolution (in azimuth), pseudo-spotlight-mode collection.…”

“…This requires the capability of scanning the beam in the elevation plane. In this respect phased array is the preferred antenna technology because of the higher degree of flexibility [1]. Main drawbacks are the costs associated to the large number of active modules and the complexity of the overall antenna architecture.…”
