Active Role of ZnO Nanorods in Thermomechanical and Barrier Performance of Poly(vinyl alcohol-co-ethylene) Formulations for Flexible Packaging

Abstract: Poly(vinyl alcohol-co-ethylene) (EVOH) films containing zinc oxide nanorods (ZnO Nrods) at 0.1, 0.5, and 1 wt%, were realized by solvent casting. The effect of ZnO Nrods content on morphological, thermal, optical, mechanical, and oxygen permeability properties were analyzed. In addition, moisture content and accelerated-aging test studies were performed, with the intention to determine the influence of zinc oxide nanofillers on the functional characteristics of realized packaging systems. Tensile properties sh… Show more

“…NaMt content led to increased brittleness of PVOH/ZnO/NaMt nanocomposites. The enhancement of both tensile strength and elongation at break values by the increase of the wt %, ZnO content in PVOH/ZnO nanocomposites is in agreement with results reported in other papers [37,38]. Additionally, the enhancement of tensile strength and the decrease of elongation at break values by the increase of the % NaMt content in the PVOH matrix consists of results reported previously [36].…”

“…Neat EVOH thin film is a transparent formulation, with a transmittance value of 95% at a visible wavelength of 700 nm. The transmittance trend is maintained stable up to the wavelength value of 350 nm, a slight reduction was registered from 250 to 350 nm [ 33 ].…”

“…The moisture content of the EVOH film was (1.49 ± 0.10)% and (1.53 ± 0.14)% after 1 and 5 weeks, respectively. The equilibrium was achieved in the first week of storage in these specific conditions [ 22 , 33 , 47 ]. The presence of caffeic acid at two different concentrations in the EVOH film induces a slight increase of absorbed moisture, the equilibrium is guaranteed in the first week of storage.…”
