Active insp ection supporting system based on mixed reality after design and manufacture in an offshore structure

Abstract: When inspection is conducted in the fields of design and manufacturing, how well that inspection is carried out is as important as how well the design and manufacturing are done. It is important that we consider how well a product is inspected in the offshore industry because offshore structures are operated far from center of operations. This paper presents a fast and effective inspection system to guarantee product performance after the design and manufacturing process by using Mixed Reality (MR) and Ubiquit… Show more

“…While companies are looking to maximize productivity, they are also looking to increase the quality and conformity of their products [14]. To ensure product quality and compliance and to apply automated test methods, technicians need to inspect hundreds of units for defects or non-conformities [14,15]. Due to human limitations, technicians are unaware of subtle indicators of non-compliance [14].…”

“…To ensure product quality and compliance and to apply automated test methods, technicians need to inspect hundreds of units for defects or non-conformities [14,15]. Due to human limitations, technicians are unaware of subtle indicators of non-compliance [14]. The use of AR combined with artificial intelligence and sensing technology can support the detection of these subtle deviations, thus increasing the quality of the product [15].…”

“…[65], [44]), one could reasonably expect that the current and emerging industrial needs should have already led to coordinated actions for testing the feasibility and efficiency of UWME for supporting UWSMI. Nevertheless, searching the pertinent literature the reader gets the impression that research in the area of UWME-for-UWSMI, with the exception of scarce high-quality attempts (e.g., [51]) has not yet grasped the threshold for being characterized as an emerging research area, even more, an emerging technological area.…”

“…All of the data files in the mobile module are synchronized with the maintenance server through the cloud system. In addition, this system is operated under wireless communication infrastructure known as a USN (ubiquitous sensor network), which was investigated in an earlier study by the authors [15]. The RFID tags refer to one of the parts lists used in the product design process, creating a link to that information.…”
