Objective: Although posterior epistaxis is rarely seen, it is an important medical problem that both decreases the quality of life of the patient and causes difficulties in the management for otorhinolaryngologists. In this study, we aimed to present the results of 30 patients who underwent transnasal endoscopic sphenopalatine artery ligation (TESPAL) for posterior epistaxis in our department. Methods:The records of 30 patients who underwent TESPAL from January 2014 to April 2016 were analyzed retrospectively, and the relationship between perioperative factors and need for revision surgery was assessed. Results:The success rate of TESPAL in posterior epistaxis was 90%. There was no relationship between surgical failure and antiaggregant use (p=0.224), anticoagulant use (p=0.534), hypertension (p=0.564), previous nasal surgery (p=0.279), and bilateral TESPAL application (p=0.279). TESPAL was seen to be effective in cases with Osler-Weber-Rendu disease, pregnancy, and uncontrollable epistaxis after rhinoplasty surgery. Mortality was seen in one of our patients not related to endoscopic ligation in the follow-up period. Conclusion:TESPAL is an effective method in the treatment of posterior epistaxis. Hypertension, antiaggregant or anticoagulant use, bilateral sphenopalatine artery ligation, and previous nasal surgery do not seem to be factors leading to surgical failure.

We studied, for the first time, the age structure of Eremias strauchi strauchi (Kessler, 1878) from a sample (18 adults) of a population living in the vicinity of Iğdır (eastern Turkey) using the skeletochronological method. The maximum observed longevity was 7 years for males and 5 years for females. The age of males ranged from 4 to 7 years (mean 4.91, n = 12), while that of females ranged from 4 to 5 years (mean 4.66, n = 6). The average snout-vent length (SVL) was 61.10 mm in males and 60.82 mm in females. The differences in mean age and SVL between sexes were not statistically significant. Intersexual differences in body size were male-biased, but this state was not statistically significant. Age and SVL were positively correlated in both sexes.

The aim of the study was to evaluate the role of hypertension in patients hospitalized for serious spontaneous epistaxis. This 6-year retrospective study was based on 219 patients hospitalized in a University Hospital ENT and Head and Neck surgery department for serious spontaneous epistaxis. The following parameters were recorded: length of hospital stay, history of hypertension, blood pressure (BP) recordings (on admission, during hospitalization and on discharge), epistaxis severity criteria, including medical and/or surgical management of epistaxis (blood transfusion depending on blood count, embolization, surgery), medications affecting clotting. Epistaxis was classified into two groups: serious and severe. No significant differences were observed between the two groups in terms of age, sex ratio, history of epistaxis and BP characteristics including history of hypertension, mean BP on admission, mean arterial pressure on discharge and number of patients in whom BP was difficult to control. Patients with more severe epistaxis had a similar exposure to anticoagulant and platelet antiaggregant medications as patients with less severe epistaxis. Overall, on univariate logistic regression analysis, no factors were independently associated with severity of epistaxis. The pathophysiology of serious spontaneous epistaxis remains to be unclear. It concerns elderly patients (>60-70 years old) with a history of hypertension in about 50% of cases. Serious spontaneous epistaxis may also be the presenting sign of underlying true hypertension in about 43% of patients with no history of hypertension. However, hypertension per se does not appear to be a statistically significant causal factor and/or a factor of severity of serious spontaneous epistaxis.
