Activation studies with an iron fischer‐tropsch catalyst in fixed bed and stirred tank slurry reactors

Abstract: A precipitated iron catalyst (100 Fe/5 Cu/4.2 K/25 SiO2 on a mass basis) was tested in a fixed bed reactor and a stirred tank slurry reactor under the same process conditions (250°C, 1.48 MPa, 2 L (STP)/gcat · h, H2 : CO = 2:3). Two different pretreatment procedures were employed (hydrogen reduction at 220°C and carbon monoxide activation at 280°C) in each of the two reactor types. In the stirred tank slurry reactor tests the activity (based on an apparent first order reaction rate constant) of the carbon mono… Show more

“…These catalysts were prepared by incipient wetness replacing SiO 2 with spent FCC material as a support. The Ruhrchemie catalyst is a robust precipitated iron catalyst for the F-T synthesis and was used initially in commercial fixed bed reactors at Sasol in South Africa [24,25]. Two different commercial spent FCC catalysts were procured from Engelhard and Albemarle Corporation for this purpose and were used in this study without any further modification.…”

“…The reactants and noncondensible products leaving the ice traps were analyzed on an on-line GC (Carle AGC 400) with multiple columns using both flame ionization and thermal conductivity detectors. Further details on the experimental set up, operating procedures and product quantification can be found elsewhere [1,2,5,8].…”

“…Sasol in South Africa. It has been tested extensively at TAMU [1][2][3][4], and was used in previous study of kinetics of Fischer-Tropsch (F-T) synthesis by Lox and Froment [5,6]. It is a robust catalyst and its selectivity is similar to that of TAMU's catalyst.…”
