Activation of VMO and VL in Squat Exercises for Women with Different Hip Adduction Loads

Abstract: Abstract.[Purpose] The purpose of this study was to investigate the activation of the vastus medialis oblique muscle (VMO) and vastus lateralis muscle (VL) during squat exercise with various hip adduction loads using a pressure-biofeedback unit, and to suggest the most effective exercise method.[Subjects] We recruited 15 healthy adult females with no pain in the knee joint and no other orthopedic problems of the lower limbs.[Methods] The enrolled individuals performed four exercises (conventional squat exercis… Show more

“…Therefore, both balance and stability between the vastus medialis and lateralis must be acquired to correct alignment of the patella 6 ) , and to prevent and treat patellofemoral pain syndrome. Some studies have analyzed differences in muscle activities or onset timing between the vastus medialis and lateralis 7 , 8 , 9 , 10 ) . In particular, weakness is often observed in the vastus medialis, which is the first muscle to show weakness among the quadriceps muscles 11 ) .…”

“…The authors reported that the muscle activity of the quadriceps increased after the experiment in both groups. Jang et al 13 ) argued that 40–80% hip adduction loading is effective in strengthening the vastus medialis oblique muscle during squat exercises. Meanwhile, Hyong and Kang 14 ) argued that unstable surfaces are effective in activating and reinforcing the vastus medialis oblique muscle during squat exercises.…”

“…Open-kinetic exercises are performed with the legs flat on the floor and spread apart, whereas closed-kinetic exercises are executed with the feet firmly on the floor. Squat exercises are closed-kinetic exercises and are effective for muscle strengthening 6 ) . Squat movements generate the co-activation of the ankle, knee, and hip joint.…”
