“…Dietary polyphenols may counteract oxidative stress in vascular and inflammatory diseases [7] by modulating key redox sensitive gene transcription via NF-κB and Nrf2/ARE [8] signaling pathways. The balance between antioxidant and pro-oxidant characteristics of polyphenols have been attributed not only to their structural features, but also to the concentration, suggesting induction of antioxidant defence metabolism by low concentrations and ROS production at high concentrations [9].…”

“…It has been demonstrated that genistein inhibits tumor-promoter, 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate-induced hydrogen peroxide production as well as its function in human polymorphonuclear leukocytes, and HL-60 cells [78;79]. Furthermore, as a follow up to genistein action showing antioxidant capacity, its effect on activation of the transcription factors-Nrf1 and Nrf2, which have been implicated in the regulation of genes involved in response to oxidative stress, was investigated [80], These transcription factors are involved in the regulation of γ-GCS and other detoxification proteins. Genistein was found to induce the cytosolic accumulation and nuclear translocation of Nrf1 and Nrf2 which closely paralleled changes in glutathione peroxidase (GPx) mRNA levels and also the activity of GPx [80].…”

“…Daidzein, one of the 2 primary isoflavones in soybeans, exhibits anticancer effects (Jing et al, 1993). Recently, genistein was also demonstrates to have anti-inflammatory properties (Hernandez-Montes et al, 2006;Verdrengh et al, 2003), and we found that genistein decreased cisplatin induced apoptosis by regulation p53 induction in kidney, and reactive oxygen species production in cisplatin-treated normal kidney HK-2 cells (Sung et al, 2008). Our previous review described in detail the anti-obesity effects of soybean for type 2 diabetes.…”
