Activation of Carbonyl-Containing Molecules with Solid Lewis Acids in Aqueous Media

Abstract: Current interest in reacting carbonyl-containing molecules in aqueous media is primarily due to the growing emphasis on conversion of biomass to fuels and chemicals. Recently, solid Lewis acids have been shown to perform catalytic reactions with carbonyl-containing molecules such as sugars in aqueous media. Here, catalysis mediated by Lewis acids is briefly discussed, Lewis acid solids that perform catalysis in aqueous media are then described, and the review is concluded with a few comments on the outlook for… Show more

“…As ar esult, reactions catalyzedb yL ewis acids are usually performed under anhydrous conditions to avoid deactivation of the catalyst. [63] At the same time, water is as olvent of choice for monosaccharides, ast hey are highly polar and poorly soluble in organic solvents. The revealed catalytic activity of Lewis acids for the isomerization of carbohydrates in bulk water has prompted enormousr esearch interest.…”

“…For example, Moliner (6) provides a detailed review of the reactivity of these materials, whereas Dapsens et al (7) give an excellent overview of the current state of the art of synthesis and characterization of Lewis acid zeolites, with a focus on Sn-containing materials. Davis and coworkers (8,9) offer detailed discussion of solid Lewis acid zeolites for catalyzing reactions in aqueous phases.…”

“…In addition to the isomerization of glucose in aqueous media (1-3), the isomerization of triose sugars in methanol or water (8) and the conversion of sugars to lactic acid derivatives in methanol have been reported using Sn-containing porous solids (9). Activation of carbonyl-containing molecules with solid acids has recently been reviewed, and includes the limited data on solid Lewis acid catalysis (especially in aqueous media) (10).…”
