Activated group 3 innate lymphoid cells promote T-cell–mediated immune responses

Abstract: Significance Group 3 innate lymphoid cells (ILC3s) play decisive roles in mammalian physiology including tissue repair, lymphoid tissue development, and immune regulation. So far, the functions of ILC3s in the adult immune system have been mainly linked to their capacity to release cytokines in response to microbial or inflammatory signals. The results presented here show that activated ILC3s can alter the outcome of adaptive immune responses by directly stimulating CD4 + … Show more

“…ILC3s are known to produce IL‐22 in response to a variety of environmental cues including cytokines (i.e. IL‐23) or Toll‐like receptor (TLR) ligands; and combinations of such stimuli may skew ILC3 activation and differentiation 4, 38. Interestingly, we observed that CD1d engagement on ILC3s acts synergistically with IL‐23 to induce increased IL‐22 production (Fig 3D–G).…”

“…1B, 1G). ILCs modulate T cell responses, express Thy1.2, and can be depleted by the Thy1.2-specific Ab 30H12 (13)(14)(15)(16)(17)(18). When neonatal RAG 2/2 mice were treated with 30H12, proliferation of Thy1.1 + OT-I cells was restored (Fig.…”

“…ILCs consist of multiple cell types that modulate tissue homeostasis and immune responses (19,20). Recently, it was shown that ILC3s can present MHC class II-restricted Ags and counterregulate CD4 + T cell responses (15,17). Whether the inhibition of CD4 + T cell LIP in neonates (Supplemental Fig.…”
