This paper reports the fabrication of a lithium ion supercapacitor from vertically-aligned carbon nanotubes (VACNTs) directly grown on a conductive substrate (SUS 310S alloy), using alcohol catalytic chemical vapour deposition technique. CNTs direct growth technique on an electrically conducting foil simplifies the electrode assembly, thus reducing the fabrication process, because the foil can directly act as a current collector. With the VACNT direct growth technique, the supercapacitor electrode was easily prepared and assembled with a non-aqueous 1 M LiPF6 electrolyte. Experimental results show that CNTs (multi-walled type structures of good quality) were perpendicularly grown to the substrate. This device demonstrates a specific capacitance of up to 101 F g-1 (at a scan rate of 1 mVs-1), and a high-rate capability, up to a scan rate of 1000 mVs-1. The VACNT electrode electrochemical performance was also measured by galvanostatic charge-discharge and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The effect of free standing CNTs direct growth on the current collector makes insulating binder material unnecessary, thus producing better ion accessibilities to its surface. This also contributes to the good and reliable electrochemical supercapacitor performance.

Graphene is a promising electrode material not only due to its intrinsic properties like good electrical conductivity, high mechanical strength and high chemical stability, but also because of its high theoretical surface area of 2630 m 2 g −1 . In this report, the effect of CVD parameters to the growth of high quality graphene on metal substrates by using plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) was extensively studied. Interestingly, synthesizing high quality graphene by PECVD technique is not only depending on the CVD parameters, but also depending on the catalysts and its plasma sources. It was found that Ni and Cu are the most favored metal catalysts for PECVD graphene growth. With high solubility of carbon (> 0.1 at. %), Ni effectively promote the growth of multilayer graphene by PECVD. However, large-area synthesis has made relatively inexpensive Cu as one of the most attractive substrates for monolayer graphene growth. Further details on the potential use of different transition metal catalysts in synthesizing graphene and consequently the specific usage of graphene based devices are discussed in this report.

Enhanced Electrochemical Performance of Sugarcane Bagasse-Derived Activated Carbon via a High-Energy Ball Milling Treatment

Activated carbon (AC) from sugarcane bagasse was prepared using dry chemical activation with KOH. It was then subjected to a high-energy ball milling (HEBM) treatment under various milling speeds (600, 1200 and 1800 rpm) to produce AC nanoparticles from micro-size particles. The AC samples after the HEBM treatment exhibited reduced particle sizes, increased mesopore volume and a rich surface oxygen content, which contribute to higher pseudocapacitance. Notably, different HEBM speeds were used to find a good electrochemical performance. As a result, the AC/BM12 material, subjected to HEBM at 1200 rpm for 30 min, exhibited the highest specific capacitance, 257 F g−1, at a current density 0.5 A g−1. This is about 2.4 times higher than that of the AC sample. Moreover, the excellence capacitance retention of this sample was 93.5% after a 3000-cycle test at a current density of 5 A g−1. Remarkably, a coin cell electrode assembly was fabricated using the AC/BM12 material in a 1 M LiPF6 electrolyte. It exhibited a specific capacitance of 110 F g−1 with a high energy density of 27.9 W h kg−1.
