Actions Speak Louder than Words, Particularly in the East: How Taiwanese Followers Perceive Leaders’ Promotion of Ethical Actions Differently from Followers in the States

Abstract: Although Western theories suggest that ethical leaders should incorporate role modelling with ethical guidance to effectively promote ethical actions, we argue that, in Taiwan, a non‐Western setting influenced by Taoism, ‘say less, do more’ may be more appropriate. Mean comparisons, based on a latent profile analysis, indicate that, in our Taiwanese sample, leaders high in role modelling and low in ethical guidance receive at least as high a moral evaluation as that of those high in both. “…Little, Robert, Benedict, and Robert (Little et al, 2007) studied how different facial shapes are associated with voters' preferences and how biological traits and a leader's posture influence political orientation. In addition, the facial appearance and verbal cues, such as speech, of candidates are expected to foretell the election's result (Ballew & Todorov, 2007; Wang et al, 2022). Appearance‐based politics, such as sex‐typed facial cues, are also found to influence the perceiver's party judgments (Carpinella & Johnson, 2013; Peng et al, 2023).…”

“…Body cues appeal to individuals (who are not biased) and increase perceived opinions of leadership (De Veirman et al, 2017; Wang et al, 2022). In general, stimuli that is easy to process (processing fluency) and comprehend are clearer and more relatable, more prosaic (Whittlesea et al, 1990), more powerful (Jacoby et al, 1988; Liao et al, 2022), and more believable (Liao et al, 2022; Reber & Schwarz, 1999).…”
