Actions on sustainable food production and consumption for the post-2020 global biodiversity framework

Abstract: Current food production and consumption trends are inconsistent with the Convention on Biological Diversity’s 2050 vision of living in harmony with nature. Here, we examine how, and under what conditions, the post-2020 biodiversity framework can support transformative change in food systems. Our analysis of actions proposed in four science-policy fora reveals that subsidy reform, valuation, food waste reduction, sustainability standards, life cycle assessments, sustainable diets, mainstreaming biodiversity, an… Show more

“…Thus, a science‐based and measurable GBF is needed. While ABS should be regarded as an integral part of sustainable use, conservation and restoration require additional means of resource mobilization such as biodiversity impact‐based contributions, accounting of value and true costs, green investments, or repealing of biodiversity‐damaging subsidies, among others (Delabre et al , 2021). These ideas need to be more thoroughly considered and flanked by science‐based indicators which—through meaningful impact assessments—will help to effectively guide the intended transformative change in our relationship with nature.…”

“…“Sustainable diets” are not mentioned directly and clearly in the SDGs; however, according to the post-2020 global biodiversity framework, in achieving the vision of “living in harmony with nature,” shifting toward a sustainable diet is one of the key actions required ( 28 ). This study is an attempt undertaken to summarize current literature on the sustainability of the Iranian diet in order to inform decision-makers on changes required to dietary guidelines and policies to be both nutritionally adequate and environmentally sustainable and to identify potential trade-offs.…”

“…This is another aspect of high CO 2 and stress combination that needs to be addressed, particularly in light of the potential negative effects of stress combinations on NUE. Because the breath of high CO 2 effects on crops is too vast to cover here, the reader is directed to several excellent reviews on the subject (Ainsworth and Long, 2021;Bright and Lund, 2021;Delabre et al, 2021;Green et al, 2020;Kurganskiy et al, 2021;Lamichaney and Maity, 2021;Lu et al, 2020;Penuelas et al, 2020;Schmidt et al, 2021;Smith, 2021;Soh et al, 2019;Tausz-Posch et al, 2020;Toreti et al, 2020;Wang and Liu, 2021;Wang et al, 2020;Xu et al, 2020).…”
