Action of Gibberellic Acid on Cell Proliferation in the Subapical Shoot Meristem of Watermelon Seedlings

Abstract: Rates of cell proliferation were about 2.5 fold greater in gibberellic acid‐treated seedlings of dwarf watermelon than in untreated dwarf seedlings as determined by direct counts of pith cells in elongating hypocotyls of watermelon. The higher rates of cell proliferation observed in normal and GA‐treated dwarf seedlings were due both to shorter cell cycle times and increased growth fractions of cells than in dwarf seedlings. The shorter duration of the cell cycle in GA‐treated seedlings was primarily due to a … Show more

“…The leafy vegetables grown with this rate of GA 3 in the MNS responded with accelerated stem elongation that was accompanied by pale green and narrowed leaves in lettuce plants and by a relatively rapid flower development in rocket plants. It is well known that GA 3 treatments promote cell division and cell enlargements that may result in stem elongation [49][50][51][52] and that exogenous gibberellins can break the rosette or enhance and control the flowering of rosette plants by means of rapid enlargement of already differentiated tissues [53]. GAs promote cytogenesis and cell elongation in stems and can also stimulate flowering when they reach the shoot apex [54,55].…”

“…Although the gibberellins inhibit cell division in some instances (SETTERFIELD 1963, KAUFMAN et al 1969) more often they are stimulatory (BOEKEN and VAN OOSTVELDT 1977, KOHLER 1977, SHININGER 1975 especially in subapical tissue (WARDLAW 1965, Lm andLoy 1976). GA usually has less effect on mitotic activity in the shoot apical meristem itself (see review by Loy 1977), an indication that it may be more effective in initiating cell division than in accelerating division in cells already mitotically active.…”

“…Indeed, exogenous GA3 reportedly reduces the length of the G' and S phases of the cell cycle in the subapical meristems of dwarf watermelon seedlings (11).…”
