Action of caerulein, glucagon or prostaglandin E1 on the motility of intestinal villi

Abstract: If injected into the artery supplying the first jejunal loop of dogs, caerulein increases, glucagon and PGE-1 decrease villous motility significantly. The relationship between the natural logarithm of the drug doses and their effects is linear.

“…Inhibitory effect of glucagon on external pancreatic secretion in the dog (Dyck et al, 1969;Iwatsuki and Hashimoto, 1975;Konturek et al,, 1974;Nakajima and Magee, 1970;Necheles, 1957;Singer et al, 1978;Sweeting, 1968), cat, rat (Shaw et al, 1973) and man (Dyck et al, 1970;Fontana et al, 1975;Zajtchuk; have been reported. Others found that the volume and bicarbonate outputs of a totally isolated dog pancreas stimulated by cholecystockinin (CCK) and secretin was increased (Murphy and Mcgeeney, 1974).…”

“…The amplitude of ileal activity induced by infusion of gastrin was not affected by glucagon but the occurrence of active episodes was delayed. Indeed, propulsive movement of the bowel in the small intestine (Lish et al, 1959;Scott and Sommers, 1974) and the contractility of intestinal villi (Ih'asz et al, 1976) were decreased by glucagon.…”
