Action of antibiotic oxacillin on in vitro growth of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) previously treated with homeopathic medicines

Abstract: Cultures of MRSA treated with Belladonna or MRSA nosode exhibited reduced growth in vitro, reduced enzymatic activity and became more vulnerable to the action of the antibiotic oxacillin. Further studies are needed on the biomolecular basis of these effects.

“…12 The in-vitro effect of homeopathy on living cells is scientifically consolidated by several renowned studies and without requiring animal models. 13 These effects have already been reported for bacteria, 12,14 protozoa, 15,16 fungi, 17 cell cultures, 18,19 and reproductive cells of mammals. 20 Recently, effects of homeopathic medicines have been demonstrated on the bacterium Streptococcus pyogenes.…”

“…These potencies were chosen to approximate studies involving homeopathic preparations and in-vitro tests found in the relevant scientific literature. 12,14 The homeopathic medicines Sulfur 12cH and Pyrogenium 12cH were produced according to the Hahnemann centesimal method: 100 manual succussions were performed between each Hahnemann dilution until potency 12cH was reached, following the instructions in the third edition of the Brazilian Homeopathic Pharmacopoeia. 9 The medicine Sulfur was chosen for its general, positive, and persistent action on the skin.…”

“…13 In addition, the authors demonstrated that treatment of MRSA cultures with Belladonna or MRSA nosode (6cH and 30cH) reduced bacterial growth in vitro, decreased enzymatic activity, and increased bacterial susceptibility to antibiotic treatment. 12 Nambison et al also found significant effects of high potencies of homeopathic drugs on bacterial cultures in vitro. 11 Several mechanisms may aid in explaining the different results derived from our study.…”

“…10,11 In addition, significant in vitro effects of homeopathic drugs on bacterial strains were demonstrated, pointing to a direct action of these remedies on the bacteria. 12,13 These studies were performed with strains of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Streptococcus pyogenes, two types of bacteria rarely causing UTIs. A direct treatment effect of homeopathic drugs on bacteria in vitro is not in accordance with the general principles of homeopathy.…”
