“…Other locations for actinomycotic lesions categorized as cervicofacial actinomycosis include, for instance, the nasal and sinus region (70)(71)(72); pharynx (73,74); larynx/tonsillae (75-78); middle ear, mastoid, and/or temporal bone (79)(80)(81); and skull base with the craniovertebral junction (82). A somewhat more distant location is the esophagus, from where actinomycotic lesions have also been recovered in both immunocompetent and immunocompromised individuals (83,84). Except for actinomycotic cases with A. meyeri in the middle ear and mastoid (79) and A. israelii in the mastoid (81) and in the skull base (82), identified by molecular methods, as well as A. odontolyticus in the larynx (77), diagnoses were not based on microbiology but on clinical manifestations and histopathology with or without a presentation of sulfur granules.…”

“…Considering the data in the literature on successful therapy of actinomycosis with ceftriaxone this drug may be a good candidate for outpatient approach because it can be administered intramuscularly once in a day. Among the few case reports are thoracic [10,11], oesophageal [12], cerebral [13] and urinary bladder [14] actinomycotic infections in which ceftriaxone was used alone, following surgery or IV penicillin therapy. In the first of our cases we used ceftriaxone following only two weeks of IV sulbactam/ampicillin.…”

“…En la revisión de la literatura efectuada por nosotros se han encontrado 16 casos (1,3). De estos, la mayoría eran pacientes infectados pon el VIH (7 casos) o bien padecían un proceso neoplásico por el que estaban recibiendo quimioterapia o inmu- nosupresores.…”

“…La actinomicosis esofágica es muy infrecuente, habiéndose descrito hasta la actualidad pocos casos. Muchos de ellos eran pacientes inmunodeprimidos o con procesos neoplásicos (1).…”
