Actinomycosis complicating chronic diverticulitis of the sigmoid colon: a missed association?

Abstract: Summary:The diagnosis and treatment of abdominal actinomycosis is difficult. We report a case of chronic diverticulitis of the sigmoid colon with stricture formation and obstruction, which was complicated by intramural actinomycosis. We suggest that diverticular strictures and actinomycosis may coexist more often than the literature suggests.

“…The disease presents typically as a slowly growing mass in the ileo-cecal region and patients usually have a history of bowel surgery or ingestion of foreign bodies [1,2,3]. We present a case of actinomycosis complicating sigmoid diverticular disease.…”
