Actigraphy-based sleep characteristics and aortic stiffness: the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis

Abstract: Objective: The study aimed to examine the association based on objective estimates of sleep duration and quality and aortic stiffness while accounting for the potential confounding effect of SDB. Method: Participants were part of the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA) Sleep study. Sleep duration and quality were assessed by 7-day wrist actigraphy, SDB by home polysomnography, and aortic stiffness by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-based aortic pulse wave velocity (aPWV), ascending and descending a… Show more

“…Abnormal sleep duration and poor quality (eg, low sleep efficiency and obstructive sleep apnea [OSA]) can contribute to disturbed BP control and cardiovascular risks, such as hypertension. 9,10 Sleep nographic data from 3,565 patients referred to an academic sleep center. BPV was calculated using the intra-individual coefficient of variation of BP measures collected 12 months before the sleep study.…”

“…Sleep also plays an essential role in cardiovascular health. Abnormal sleep duration and poor quality (eg, low sleep efficiency and obstructive sleep apnea [OSA]) can contribute to disturbed BP control and cardiovascular risks, such as hypertension 9,10 . Sleep architecture is an objective measure of sleep quality assessed by polysomnography (PSG).…”

“…While this U-shaped has generally been advocated, the relation is more complex. For example, objectively measured sleep duration had a positive linear relationship with arterial stiffness in the community-dwelling elderly population [97]. Furthermore, a meta-analysis on over 3 million participants demonstrated a J-shaped relationship between sleep duration and increased risk for mortality and incident CVD [98].…”

“…58,59 Critérios semelhantes foram usados por outros investigadores. 60 Calculamos o tempo de vigília após o início do sono (WASO), definido pelos períodos de vigília que ocorrem após o início do sono definido. A eficiência do sono foi definida pela proporção do tempo total de sono em relação ao tempo total na cama, sendo a menor eficiência do sono significando maior fragmentação do sono.…”
