Actical Accelerometer Sedentary Activity Thresholds for Adults

Abstract: These findings suggest that a threshold of 100 cpm is appropriate for classifying sedentary activity of adults when using the Actical. As such, wear periods with minutes registering less than 100 cpm would be classified as time spent performing sedentary activity.

“…To be included in the analyses, participants were required to have 4 or more valid days, with ≥10 h of wear time (Colley et al 2010). Sedentary time was defined as <100 counts per minute (cpm) (Wong et al 2011), LPA as 100-1499 cpm, and MVPA as ≥1500 cpm (Puyau et al 2004). Minutes per day of sedentary time, LPA, and MVPA were calculated.…”

“…17 The cut-points used for determining PA intensity were: SED (25 counts per 15-second epoch and 100 counts per 60-second epoch) and MVPA (288 counts per 15-second epoch and 1,150 counts per 60-second epoch). 16,23 Any values between these cut-points were categorized as light PA.…”

“…20 Standard cut-points were used to measure time spent in various levels of movement intensity, including sedentary, light, moderate and vigorous. 20,21 Adherence to the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology's (CSEP) Canadian PA guidelines for adults was used to classify the women as 'active' or 'non-active'. These guidelines recommend 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous PA (MVPA) per week accumulated in 10-minute bouts, to maintain good health.…”
