Acrostichus rhynchophori n. sp. (Rhabditida: Diplogastridae): a phoretic associate of Rhynchophorus cruentatus Fabricius and R. palmarum L. (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) in the Americas

Abstract: Acrostichus dauer larvae (JIII) were recovered during dissections of the palmetto weevil, Rhynchophorus cruentatus, from southern Florida, and the palm weevil, R. palmarum, from Colombia, Costa Rica and Trinidad. Based upon morphological and molecular studies, the four isolates are conspecific and are described herein as A. rhynchophori n. sp. Acrostichus rhynchophori n. sp. is characterised by narrow, flap-like dorsal tooth, female gonads not reflexed to the level of the vulva, male spicule and gubernaculum m… Show more

“…When we examined previously published SEMs and our unpublished observations of rhabditids and diplogastrids, this, or a similar arrangement, was found only in some diplogastrids: Acrostichus spp. (Kanzaki et al, 2009b(Kanzaki et al, , 2010a, Pristionchus spp. (Kanzaki et al, 2012a) and Diplogastrellus metamasius (Kanzaki et al, 2008).…”

“…is similar to A. puri and A. halicti. These three species share several characteristic morphological traits, viz., modification of anterior end of cheilostomatal plate, duplicated gymnostomatal wall, very complicated gubernaculum structure, distally hooked spicule with flap-like rostrum (Giblin & Kaya, 1984;Kanzaki et al, 2009;Kanzaki et al, unpubl.). Furthermore, all species share phoretic associations with halictid bees, albeit different species that nest in different substrates (soil for H. ligatus and rotting wood for A. pura and Megalopta spp.).…”

“…These papillae were confirmed in all of the more than 50 specimens examined, confirming the stability of this character in R. humicolus n. sp. Fe male vulval papillae have not been reported in any other diplogastrid species examined by scanning electron mi croscopy (SEM), e.g., Acrostichus Rahm, 1928(Kanzaki et al, 2009), Diplogastrellus Paramonov, 1952(Kanzaki e ta i, 2008, Micoletzkya Weingartner, 1955(Susoy et al, 2013, Parasitodiplogaster Poinar, 1979(Giblin-Davis et al, 2006, or Pristionchus (Photos e ta i, 2006). However, these small papillae are not conspicuous, and could easily be overlooked during light microscopic observation.…”
