Acrolein Determination by Means of Tryptophane. A Colorimetric Micromethod

Abstract: A new colorimetric method of analysis for acrolein has the advantages over previous methods of a spectrally purer color with e maximum in the absorption curve, a colorless blank, and greater specificity. The method is based on the color produced by the condensation of acrolein with tryptophane Induced by concentrated hydrochloric acid, and is capable of detecting quantitatively as little as 15 micrograms of acrolein. The method is suitable for quantitative work only in the absence of other aldehydes, unless th… Show more

“…Since several kinds of other aldehydes are also known to be alkali-unstable colorable components, 15) data differentiating between 3-HPA and other colorable aldehydes is also required to confirm 3-HPA production in complex matrices. For this purpose, we examined the absorption spectrum of HLC.…”

“…2) has been reported to be characteristic only of 3-HPA and acrolein. 15,19) It appears unlikely that HLC was acrolein, since it has been shown that acrolein is not produced in a microbiological glycerol fermentation process without thermal distillation of 3-HPA. 19) In addition, when LAB lacked 3-HPA productivity, or when glycerol, substrate for 3-HPA, was not added, HLC was not produced in the silage (Tables 1 and 3).…”
