This paper proposes a new MIMO based CDMA code acquisition scheme. The pilot codes consist of a number of short Gold code sequences which are transmitted in parallel using a group of transmit antennas. Reception diversity is performed by multiple receive antennas at the receiver. Three different acquisition detection techniques are proposed and compared. Corresponding threshold optimizations are investigated as well. Detection and false alarm probabilities are derived in closed form based on the outputs of non-coherent matched filters. The acquisition performance is evaluated in terms of mean acquisition time (MAT) in Rayleigh fading environment. It is shown that the proposed MIMO acquisition scheme exhibits a much better MAT performance than the conventional single-antenna acquisition scheme. The results reveal that multiple receive antennas can be utilized to significantly reduce the MAT at the expense of receiver complexity increase. On the other hand, increasing the number of transmit antennas makes the MAT performance more robust in the presence of strong interference.Keywords Code acquisition · Code division multiple access (CDMA) · Multiple input multiple output (MIMO)

Abstract-In this paper, we investigate the serial-search-based initial code-acquisition performance of direct-sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA) employing multiple transmit/ multiple receive antennas when communicating over uncorrelated Rayleigh channels. We characterize the associated performance trends as a function of the number of antennas. It is demonstrated that, in contrast to our expectation, the achievable correctdetection probability degrades in our typical target operational E c /I 0 range as the number of transmit antennas is increased. When maintaining a given total transmit power, our findings suggest that increasing the number of transmit antennas results in the combination of the low-energy noise-contaminated signals of the transmit antennas, which ultimately increases the mean acquisition time (MAT). However, it is extremely undesirable to increase the MAT when the system is capable of attaining its target bit-error-ratio performance at reduced signal-power levels, as a benefit of employing multiple transmit antennas.Index Terms-Code acquisition, direct-sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA), multiple transmit/multiple receive antennas (MTMR), serial search.

Abstract-In this contribution we investigate both differentially coherent and noncoherent code acquisition schemes in the multiple transmit/receive antenna aided DS-CDMA downlink, when communicating over uncorrelated Rayleigh channels. It is demonstrated that in contrast to our expectations, the achievable Mean Acquisition Time (MAT) degrades at low E c/Io values, as the number of transmit antennas is increased in both differentially coherent and noncoherent code acquisition system scenarios, even though the degree of performance degradation depends upon the specific scheme considered. Ironically, our findings suggest that increasing the number of transmit antennas in a MIMO-aided CDMA system results in combining the low-energy, noise-contaminated signals of the transmit antennas, which ultimately increases the MAT by an order of magnitude, when the SINR is relatively low. Therefore our future research will be aimed at specifically designing acquisition schemes for MIMO systems.
