Acquired myopia in Vogt–Koyanagi–Harada disease

Abstract: Myopia progression as well as increase in axial length occurs in VKH disease. The link between choroidal thinning and axial length elongation in VKH patients gives some insights into axial length increase of pathologic myopia.

“… 17 It was reported that eyes with significant myopic progression developed severe SGF within 4.3 ± 3.1 years, and the mean refractive error was −3.17 diopter (D) in progression of myopia in > −1.0 D and −2.89 D in no progression myopia group and no significant difference was found. 24 Additionally, no significant difference was observed in our short follow-up study, thus we think that a smaller SERE may be a risk factor leading to SGF, and that myopia progresses over a long interval.…”

“…87 However, patients with an acquired choroidal thinning still demonstrate axial elongation without developing posterior staphylomas. 88 Furthermore, patients with retinitis pigmentosa can develop posterior staphylomas in areas where the choroid was intact. 89 Bruch's membrane is an acellular, five-layered extracellular matrix located between the RPE and choroid.…”

“…Takahashi et al reported that in Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada (VKH) disease, progression of myopia occurs with increasing axial length. In addition, the sunset glow fundus was more frequently observed in VKH patients with myopia progression than in patients without myopia progression, and the subfoveal choroidal thickness was found to be thinner ( 33 ). We investigated the inhibitory effect of lactoferrin on myopia onset and progression using a mouse model of lens-induced myopia.…”
