Experts in diverse fields have investigated sound in cities throughout the United States. This research aims to examine sound levels and determine its contributors at the transit-oriented development (TOD) station and neighborhood levels by studying selected Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) light rail stations. A multilevel analysis was performed to model the likelihood of TOD stations and neighborhoods affecting sound levels, controlling for station amenities, socio-demographics and built environment characteristics. Sound measurements were sampled in three time intervals with 15 min sampling over weekdays and weekends at TOD and non-TOD stations by a type II SPL meter that was mounted on a small camera tripod at a height of 1.5 m, at a distance of 1.5 m from rails and curbs. The research team found that amenities, built environmental characteristics, and neighborhood features have significant implications on sound levels at both the TOD station and the neighborhood level, which affects quality of life (QoL). TOD stations that include more amenities have a greater level of significance on sound levels. Additionally, neighborhoods with a pervasive street grid configuration, public facilities, and built environment densities are significantly associated with a likelihood of high sound levels. Conversely, higher population densities and intersection densities decrease the likelihood of a high sound level environment. These patterns provide an arena for transportation, urban, and environmental planning and policymaking to generate transformative solutions and policies.

Metro stations can be included in the indoor soundscape literature. This study examines the relationship between space recognition and soundmarks. Sound recordings were taken at various sites in and around a metro station and a listening test applied to investigate whether spaces could be recognized only by the sounds associated with them. For each sound recording, participants were asked to describe the recorded space from 17 adjective pairs and define the sound sources. The results are as follows: (1) only half of the participants were able to correctly determine the function of the spaces; (2) bird, wind, and water soundmarks were identified in the urban park near the metro station; pay gates and coin sounds were identified in the station entrance; and the metro train itself, as well as its brakes, doors, and announcement system, were identified on the underground platform; (3) for outdoor spaces, participants tended to choose adjectives such as pleasant, calming, or natural, while for indoor spaces they chose words such as unpleasant, stressing, and artificial; and (4) females on average are able to identify 30% more sounds correctly than males are, and younger age groups' correct identification rate is greater than older groups' by 10% on average.

This paper investigated how young and aged people response differently on the public address sounds in subway platform according to various reverberation and diffuseness. Both word intelligibility (WI) and listening difficulty (LD) tests were adopted as experimental method. Twelve simulated sound fields at the same position were prepared according to the combination of four different reverberation times (RT) and three different interaural cross-correlation coefficients (IACC). Auralized sounds with anechoic test words of actual station names were presented to young and aged subjects at the fixed sound pressure level. As results, LD results showed significant correlation with RT for both young and aged subjects, whereas significant correlation of WI results and RT was found only in aged subjects. Aged subjects showed worse speech intelligibility performances on public address sounds than young subjects due to their worse hearing level. RT was found as the most important factor to determine speech intelligibility for both young and aged subject, whereas aged subject showed better speech intelligibility performances with lower IACC. From the regression analysis, LD rating was estimated from the measured RT and IACC. Additionally, the effects of word familiarity, individual noise sensitivity and hearing level on the speech intelligibility were discussed.
