Acoustic tracheal rupture provides insights into larval mosquito respiration

Abstract: Source of released gas into the abdomen. We found that AL treatment causes instantaneous and irreversible trauma to mosquito larvae. Before and after acoustic exposure of Aedes aegypti and Culex pipiens larvae depicting the impact on internal structures such as the active and future instar DTTs are shown in Fig. 1. Unexposed specimens' (Fig. 1a) DTTs are intact with the active DTTs internal to the liquid filled future instar

“…It is clear that this procedure would negatively affect not only mosquitoes, but also the rest of the organisms living in the same environment. More recently, Nyberg and Muto (2020) investigated the mechanism of action of what authors called “mosquito acoustic larviciding” . They reported that their acoustic treatment provoked the tracheal system a series of what they reported as “previously unobserved phenomena” According to Nyberg and Muto (2020), these phenomena would be difficult to explain based on the present knowledge of mosquito respiration, eventually concluding that the respiratory function in mosquitoes is far from being completely understood.…”

“…We adopted a technology employing acoustic waves generated by an ultrasound transducer, the Larvasonic apparatus (New Mountain Innovations Inc, Old Lyme, NY, USA) [5]. The transducer distributes acoustic energy uniformly in the horizontal plane and has a 360-degree volume of vertical coverage.…”

“…Mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) transmit several of the most relevant life-threatening infectious diseases worldwide, including malaria, different types of encephalitis, lymphatic filariasis, West Nile virus, chikungunya, yellow fever, as well as Zika and dengue virus [1][2][3][4][5].…”

“…We synthesized a N 1 -(7-chloroquinoline-4-yl) ethane-1,2-diamine derivative by the method of Shafi et al 8 against A. stephensi providing no harmful impacts on the environment as well on non-target organisms (see Nyberg et al 27 ). As the plasmodium parasite becomes more resistant to quinoline based anti-malarial drugs, it becomes even more important to design a potent anti-malarial molecule 28 , 29 .…”
