Acoustic resonance in interdigitally electroded electro-optic devices

Abstract: Grating based electro-optic modulators exhibit acoustic resonances. The performance of a device whose operation is based on the electro-optic variations of the refractive index may be affected by the piezoelectric resonances when operated with AC signals. The author isolates the causes of these observed acoustic resonances and describes simple experimental procedures adopted to suppress them without affecting the modulation characteristics of the device.

“…Most of the experimental techniques in laser beam steering use the production of a controllable phase grating inside a suitably selected transparent medium. These techniques are based on acousto-optic interactions (Freyre 1981, Young andYao ,1981), photo-refractive interactions (Henshaw 1982) and electro-optic interactions (Gavraladis and Palmer 1978, Hong et af 1978, Ramachandran 1979, 1985. In these experimental arrangements the beam steering wave (acoustic wave or electromagnetic wave or electric wave) travelling inside the transparent medium produces a change in the refractive index of the medium.…”

“…The relative intensity transformed into the nth order by the above phase profile is given by (Ramachandran 1975) where the qiy are the amplitudes of the Fourier components of q y , ki are the order numbers ranging fromx to + x , andJki ( q i y ) denotes the Bessel coefficient of argument qI,. and order ki.…”
