Acoustic Estimate of the Krill (Euphausia superba) Density between South Shetland Islands and South Orkney Islands, Antarctica, During 2002/2003 Austral Summer

Decreasing effects of fluoride contents in Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) as affected by chemical treatments with and without heating were investigated. The used chemicals were NaOH, Na 2 CO 3 , Na 2 SO 3 , citric acid, acetic acid, phosphoric acid, HCl, ethanol, lysine, aminoguanidine, arginine, carnitine, betaine, and creatine. Fluoride contents per dry weight were 788 AE 10 mg kg À1 in the whole body of krill (WBK) and 294 AE 4 mg kg À1 in the peeled krill meat (PKM) respectively. When WBK was treated with chemicals with and without heating or thawed, fluoride was not decreased. On the other hand, when the PKM was treated with chemicals without heating was remarkably decreased to less than 100 mg kg À1 , which is the criteria recommended by FDA. Particularly, the treatment of betaine without heating showed the best reduction effect of 30 AE 6 mg kg À1 , followed by carnitine (38 AE 17 mg kg À1 ), acetic acid (52 AE 1 mg kg À1 ), phosphoric acid (67 AE 2 mg kg À1 ) and hydrochloric acid (68 AE 1 mg kg À1 ).

Ecosystem-based management (EBM) requires more extensive information than singlespecies management. Active underwater acoustic methods provide a means of collecting a wealth of ecosystem information with high space-time resolution. Worldwide fisheries institutes and agencies are carrying out regular acoustic surveys covering many marine shelf ecosystems, but these data are underutilized. In addition, more and more acoustic data collected by vessels of opportunity are becoming available. To encourage their use for EBM, we provide a brief introduction to acoustic and complementary data collection methods in the water column, and review current and potential contributions to monitoring population abundance and biomass, spatial distributions, and predator-prey relationships. Further development of acoustics-derived indicators is needed. We review and propose indicators for assessing and monitoring zooplankton, population dynamics of fish and other nekton, and changes in diversity and food-web functioning. Acoustic methods have the potential to make a strong contribution to EBM. Evaluation of new indicators and suitable reference points in different ecosystems are the current challenges.

This study is aimed to estimate the density of Antarctic krill that inhabit in the area around South Shetland Island by using a dB-difference method. An acoustic survey was conducted from 13 to 24 April in 2016 in the sea of South Shetland. Acoustic data on frequency 38 and 120 kHz were collected. The Antarctic krill echo was extracted for the SV120-38 kHz range of 0.4–14.3 dB, which was obtained by applying the size of the collected Antarctic krill in this study (25–60 mm). The mean Antarctic krill density across the survey area was 33.65 g m−2 (CV = 45.97%).
