Acorenone B: AChE and BChE Inhibitor as a Major Compound of the Essential Oil Distilled from the Ecuadorian Species Niphogeton dissecta (Benth.) J.F. Macbr

Abstract: This study investigated the chemical composition, physical proprieties, biological activity, and enantiomeric analysis of the essential oil from the aerial parts of Niphogeton dissecta (culantrillo del cerro) from Ecuador, obtained by steam distillation. The qualitative and quantitative analysis of the essential oil was realized by gas chromatographic and spectroscopic techniques (GC-MS and GC-FID). Acorenone B was identified by GC-MS and NMR experiments. The enantiomeric distribution of some constituents has … Show more

“…Among the natural products the authors are interested in, we can cite essential oils (EOs) [ 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 , 9 , 10 , 11 ]. According to the European Pharmacopeia, an EO is an “odorous product, usually of complex composition, obtained from a botanically defined plant raw material by steam distillation, dry distillation, or a suitable mechanical process without heating.…”

“…In the tropical species Niphogeton dissecta, it was the major oil compound and the essential oil had some antibutylcholinesterase activity. [27] β-Elemene was in the present oils a minor compound accounting in most samples for less than 4 % of the oil and reaching a maximum of 12.2 % in the leaf essential oil from KO2. In contrast, a flower essential oil from Serbia had with 40.4 % β-elemene as main compound.…”
