Acneiform Dermatoses

Abstract: Acneiform dermatoses are follicular eruptions. The initial lesion is inflammatory, usually a papule or pustule. Comedones are later secondary lesions, a sequel to encapsulation and healing of the primary abscess. The earliest histological event is spongiosis, followed by a break in the follicular epithelium. The spilled follicular contents provokes a nonspecific lymphocytic and neutrophilic infiltrate. Acneiform eruptions are almost always drug induced. Important clues are sudden onset within days, widespread … Show more

“…The patient's history, the clinical findings, the exposure to one of the known causative drugs and the disappearance of lesions after discontinuation of the offending medication should lead to the diagnosis. 2 Female sex is nearly 4 times more prone to steroid induced acne than the male sex. 3,7 Acne was subsided following discontinuation of drug within a week, though severe lesions may take several weeks to resolve and may require topical therapy.…”

“…1 It results from a direct effect on the follicular epithelium causing a focal degeneration with localized intrafollicular and perifollicular neutrophilic inflammatory reaction. 2 Eruptions are characterized by their unusual distribution, monomorphic lesions, occurrence beyond the usual age of distribution of acne vulgaris, widespread involvement and clearing of lesions when the drug is discontinued. 1,3 We report a case of prednisolone induced acneiform lesions in a 16 year old female patient.…”

“…Monomorphic lesions, widespread extention, unusual age for acne and unusual localizations are characteristics of drug-induced acne [7]. Comedones are not usually appeared conversely acne vulgaris [1,7,8].…”

“…Pustules are especially sterile for bacteria, fungi, yeasts or Demodex mites. Sometimes signs of systemic drug toxicity such as fever and malaise are present [7]. Pruritus is common, similarly in acneiform skin eruption induced by epidermal growth factor receptor inhibitors [9].…”
