AcMNPV ac143 (odv-e18) is essential for mediating budded virus production and is the 30th baculovirus core gene

Abstract: Autographa californica multiple nucleopolyhedrovirus (AcMNPV) ac143 (odv-e18) is a late gene that encodes for a predicted 9.6 kDa structural protein that locates to the occlusion derived viral envelope and viral induced intranuclear microvesicles [Braunagel, S.C., He, H., Ramamurthy, P., and Summers, M.D. (1996). Transcription, translation, and cellular localization of three Autographa californica nuclear polyhedrosis virus structural proteins: ODV-E18, ODV-E35, and ODV-EC27. Virology 222, 100-114.]. “…by Western blotting (data not shown). The identification of ODV-E18 as a BV-associated protein corroborates a recent finding that ODV-E18 is essential for BV production (71). The role of ODV-E25 in BV infection needs to be further investigated.…”

“…We demonstrated here that ac93 and odv-e25 were conserved among all baculoviruses and were baculovirus core genes, thus increasing the total number of core genes from 31 to 33 and designating p33-ac93-odv-e25 as the third core gene cluster (13,27,33). The failure to identify ac93 and odv-e25 homologs in hymenopteran and dipteran baculoviruses by BLAST searches might simply be because they are too highly divergent to be identified by this technique (1,13,18,33).…”

“…Based on phylogenetic evidence, genomic composition, and morphological characteristics, the family Baculoviridae is divided into four genera: Alphabaculovirus (lepidopteran-specific NPVs), Betabaculovirus (lepidopteranspecific Granuloviruses), Gammabaculovirus (hymenopteranspecific NPVs), and Deltabaculovirus (dipteran-specific NPVs) (16). Despite the diversity in the genetic content present in different baculovirus genomes, a set of 31 genes present in all of the sequenced baculovirus genomes has been identified and assigned as the baculovirus core genes; p33 (ac92) is one of these genes (13,16,27,33). Ac92 is associated with both BV and ODV (4,7,30,32,44).…”

“…Notably, the link between these two genes was also conserved in baculoviruses. To date, three core gene clusters whose relative positions are conserved in all of the sequenced baculovirus genomes have been identified (31)(32)(33). One of these contained a set of four genes, i.e., dnahel, pif-4, 38k, and lef-5.…”
