Acknowledgment Research Genealogy for Today’s Quantified Academia

Abstract: Acknowledgments are recognized as relevant objects of study in the sociology of science; yet it is difficult to extract a clear understanding of their value and functions in the reward system of science. Our acknowledgment research genealogy suggests that a literaturebased framework could guide further studies and research evaluation in academia.

“…The authors of this review have already drawn partial historical (Paul‐Hus, Desrochers, Pecoskie, & Larivière, ; Desrochers, Paul‐Hus, & Larivière, ) and thematic (Desrochers, Paul‐Hus, & Pecoskie, ; Paul‐Hus et al, ) analyses of the acknowledgments literature in order to begin to establish its evolution and trends, sometimes as part of previous, exploratory phases of the current study. Two of them have also published a study on the coverage of acknowledgements in the Web of Science with another collaborator (Paul‐Hus, Desrochers & Costas, 2016).…”
