Acidified infant formula explained

Abstract: The development of effective methods to prevent acute gastroenteritis is an important goal for infant health. Exclusive breastfeeding and postponement of complementary foods until the age of six months is recommended for healthy infants. However, at times, infant formula is required. Various types are commercially available. Acidified cow's milk formula has been found to prevent the growth of pathogenic bacteria and concurring diarrhoeal disease.Peer reviewed.

“…Indeed, the porous structure of the protein can trap phenolics and change their availability for absorption [40]. Recently, whey fortification in food formulations is becoming very attractive for the consumers, such as bread [41], cereals blends [42], baby food [43], and fermented infant formula [44].…”

“…Bacterial elimination from the formula can be achieved by means of heat, homogenization, pasteurization, sterilization, and/or spraydrying (Labuschagne et al 2012). Infant fermented formulas are generally mixtures of milk and whey in 50:50 and 40:60 ratios, respectively.…”

“…While the remaining bacterial components and the effects of bacterial metabolites after fermentation are the sources of additional benefits of such formulas (Szajewsk et al, 2015). In this concern, the bacterial metabolites which have been revealed after fermintation are considered to have probiotic effects on infant health although the bacteria itself is no more available (Labuschagne et al, 2013). The fermented infant formulae have been used successfully to prevent or relieve gastrointestinal symptoms in infants (Heijning et al, 2014).…”
