Acidic Skin Care Promotes Cutaneous Microbiome Recovery and Skin Physiology in an Acute Stratum Corneum Stress Model

Abstract: Introduction: Skin microbiome and skin physiology are important indicators of the epidermal homeostasis status. Stress models can reveal pathological conditions and modulating effects. Here we investigated the cutaneous microbiome in relation to skin physiology after mild tape stripping (TS) without treatment compared to two cosmetic leave-on lotions (pH 5.5 vs. pH 9.3) in 25 healthy volunteers. Methods: The microbiome was analyzed by 16S-rRNA-gene amplicon sequencing and put in relation to the following ski… Show more

“…Moreover, subtle zonal differences in facial transepidermal water loss (TEWL), SC hydration and skin surface pH are reported, including differences across ethnic groups 6 . SC function also depends on the interplay between the chemosensory barrier, the epidermal microbiome and the innate immune system 1 and appears to be related to epidermal microbiome diversity 7 . Dysregulation of skin barrier function can induce an inflammatory cascade and potentially skin disorders, 1 such as dry, flaky or sensitive skin.…”

“…In the facial region, a specific relationship between sebum, hydration levels and microbiome diversity has been shown 85–88 . Furthermore, skin care has shown to be of benefit both to microbiome and epidermal barrier function in a stress model and dry and flaky skin conditions 7,89 …”

“…TEWL measurements can be used to assess the inside-out barrier. TEWL values are indirectly representative of the outside-in barrier predicting the penetration rate of topically applied substances and pharmaceutical compounds thru the epidermis [22][23][24][25]. The limitations of classical probes assessing TEWL are the use ofonly one or two sensors.…”
