“…ABSTRACT: The recent collapse of the Brazilian tailing dams, such as the Fundão Dam, located in Mariana (state of Minas Gerais), and the Dam I of the Feijao Mine, located in Brumadinho (also state of Minas Gerais), drew attention to the safety of this type of dam. As described by Luz and Lázaro (2019), these dam collapses, which occurred on 11/05/2015 and 01/25/2019, respectively, caused a total of 19 and 270 fatalities (3rd largest accident in the world and the largest in Brazil, for this type of dam), a river pollution of 600 km in the Doce River (the largest environmental disaster in the world for a tailing dam) and 80 km in the Paraopeba River. This article aims to present a study, through the construction of a physical model, using a three-dimensional modeling of the topography of the Brumadinho Dam region with a GIS, and the simulation of a flood wave caused by the dam break, for a better understanding of the mud flow mechanism which occurred after the collapse of the dam.…”
