Acidentes de trânsito em Belo Horizonte: o que revelam três diferentes fontes de informações, 2008 a 2010

Abstract: Despite some incomplete record keeping and non-specific death registry codes, it was possible to characterize the main factors associated with accidents: elderly pedestrians, motorcycle riders, alcohol consumption and speeding. The study demonstrated the complementarity of the three data sources, with their different goals, and revealed important features of the traffic accident event-chain and victim profile, providing key data for the development of mitigation strategies.

“…A study conducted in Belo Horizonte, in the period 2008-2010, noted difficulty of measuring the actual number of deaths and serious injuries based on sources of information that record the RTA in isolation. 24 For the victims of traffic -SLV -, there was an increase of 18% in the number of deaths after linkage between banks SLV and SIM, coincides with the results of a previous study performed in Italy in 2000, when there was an increase of 21% of deaths in relation to the official records of the police after linkage. 25 In another study, this time in Mali, after the linkage, the mortality rate was two times greater when compared to the rate calculated using only data from the police.…”

“…Fatality was more than 7 times higher among pedestrians compared with drivers/riders. This finding is similar to a recent report in Brazil (Paixão et al, 2015). This is clearly attributable to differential energy transfers during collision to the different road users.…”

“…This provides an explanation of females' and males' predominance as pedestrians and drivers/riders respectively as shown Figure 10.1 and Table 10.3. A recent report in Brazil also established that male drivers have a higher probability of death compared to their female counterparts (Paixão, Gontijo, De Freitas Drumond, De Lima Friche, & Caiaffa, 2015).…”

“…Traffic accidents are a serious public health problem, with high morbidity and mortality rates. Data indicate that 50 million people suffer injuriesmany of them with sequelae -and 1.2 million die every year in the world due to traffic accidents, which causes social and humanitarian problems, in addition to significant damage to the economy [1][2][3][4][5][6] .…”

“…In addition to the high mortality rate in Belo Horizonte in the period (19.4 per 100 thousand inhabitants), there was an increase in accidents and non-fatal victims, with an increase in the hospitalization rate (34%) and hospital costs (53%) and greater involvement of motorcycles in proportion to the fleet. Despite the gaps in the records, it is possible to point out some recurrences: older pedestrians, motorcyclists, alcohol use and speeding 4 .…”
