Achromatic phase retarder applied to
MWIR & LWIR dual-band

Abstract: The development of the dual-band IR imaging polarimetry creates the need for achromatic phase retarder used in dual-band. Dielectric grating with the period smaller than the illuminating wavelength presents a strong form-birefringence. With this feature, the combination of several subwavelength gratings can be used as achromatic phase retarders. We proposed a combination of 4 subwavelength structured gratings (SWGs) used as an achromatic quarter-wave plate (QWP) applied to MWIR & LWIR bandwidths. Design method… Show more

“…There are three main approaches to making an achromatic elliptical polarizer. One approach uses negative dispersion materials [13] or form birefringence [14][15][16] to reduce the variation of retardance due to the wavelength change. Another approach uses helical materials with variable pitch, such as cholesteric liquid crystal polymer, to achieve a broadband circular polarizer [17,18].…”

“…These expressions have been incorrectly used under the condition ϕ ≠ 0 [8,11]. However, it is possible to calculate the overall delay, Δ, introduced for any orientation of the plates, ϕ ≠ 0, via diagonalization of M. Since matrix M is self-adjoint and unitary, the module of its eigenvalues, μ i , is unit…”

“…The obtained expression is a generalization of the currently used equation to any azimuth [8][9][10][11]. In former works, achromatism is achieved only for two wavelengths and does not have a parameter that characterizes the performance of these achromatic designs.…”

“…There are several papers [12][13][14][15][16] related to the calculation methods of quartz and sapphire AWPs. Some corrections were described in basic methods of WP calculations, because they are not suitable for the case when the measuring system has high resolution (as compared to the FWHM of interference peaks).…”
