Background and aims -Diatom-based water quality management is increasing, and specific indicators are required for the assessment of priority substances such as metals. We tested a variety of features of diatom communities, in a river exhibiting a gradient of zinc contamination (the Riera d'Osor, Spain), to determine the most relevant ones. Key results -Community composition changed over time of exposure, and with the intensity of metal contamination. Species richness was significantly lower at the most contaminated sites. Species composition was more even under background and low exposure levels, but low metal inputs selected for varieties of Cocconeis placentula (var. placentula, euglypta and lineata). Small taxa (Eolimna minina, or Achnanthidium minutissimum and A. pyrenaicum) dominated in the most contaminated sites, and deformed diatom cells were found abundant. Conclusions -Although species composition clearly responded to varied levels of zinc pollution, combining cell size classes or total biovolume of the community and percentages of deformities allowed reliable assessment of the presence, and intensity, of contamination. These descriptors present the major advantage of being independent of regional taxonomic peculiarities, thus providing robust assessment irrespective of the area studied.

The Atacama Desert (21-26˚S) is currently one of the driest places on Earth and metal(loid) s are of special concern for this region, which hosts the largest-known porphyry copper deposits produced in Chile. Evidence of past environmental conditions is commonly preserved in natural archives, such as lacustrine sediments. Sediment records obtained from Inca Coya Lake (22˚20'S-68˚35'W, 2534 m.a.s.l.), a small lake located in the Atacama Desert, reflected the evolution of regional mining activity during the 20 th century and sedimentation associated with decadal climate variability. We studied the aquatic community structure changes recorded in sediment records from Inca Coya Lake. By analysis of magnetic properties (susceptibility, hysteresis curves and Curie temperatures), grain size and geochemical composition of the sediments, we identified environmental periods and changes in the community of benthic and planktonic organisms (diatoms and diapausing egg bank). We identified three detrital episodes that we interpret as dry/wet phases during the last 90 years associated with the increase of flash flood events promoting hypoxia oscillations; anthropogenic (mining activity) signals were also identified. Invertebrate community structure (primary consumers) reflected the metal exposure, measured as changes in assemblage composition through species turnover. Diatom community composition was best associated with variables related to wetter/drier alternation and consequent changes in oxygen availability. Bioindicators analyzed (diatoms, diapausing egg bank and invertebrate community) demonstrated to be excellent indicators of the bioavailability of compounds in the aquatic ecosystem of Inca Coya Lake, allowing the environmental impact assessment of the water resources due to flash floods and mining activity in the driest desert of the world. Deformities in diatoms are increasingly used as an indicator of toxic stress in freshwaters. However, the percentage of deformities alone often fails at highlighting the magnitude of toxic exposure. It has been suggested that the severity of the deformation (degree of departure from normal form) could be a valuable aspect to consider in addition to the percentage of deformities in an assemblage. An approach combining the assessment of deformities coupled with information on their severity could improve the sensitivity of this biomarker.With the aim of quantifying the deviation from the normal form, we tested the applicability of geometric morphometry to evaluate the degree of deformities in different diatom species. We used photomicrographs of normal and deformed specimens from laboratory cultures of Gomphonema gracile, Nitzschia palea, and of Achnanthidium minutissimum from field samples collected along a gradient of toxic contamination. The geometric morphometry approach is based on several landmarks positioned on the outline of the diatom valves, followed by a Procrustes superimposition analysis to determine shape variations.Statistical analyses were conducted based on the geometrical coordinates of the landmarks. This technique allowed to discriminate between normal and deformed individuals. The geometric morphometry approach revealed a gradient in the intensity of the deformities observed on Gomphonema gracile and Achnanthidium minutissimum, in-line with a priori, visually-determined (subjective) classifications. A relationship between the degree of deformity in Achnanthidium minutissimum and a gradient of zinc contamination was found. In contrast, the approach failed to obtain good fit for Nitzschia palea individuals because deformities in this species were more variable in terms of their location on the valves.Geometric morphometry provided encouraging results to objectively quantify the intensity of diatom deformities affecting valve outline, and could easily be implemented in further automatic diatom identification developments.
