Achieving the 95 95 95 targets for all: A pathway to ending AIDS

Abstract: In December 2020, UNAIDS released a new set of ambitious targets calling for 95% of all people living with HIV to know their HIV status, 95% of all people with diagnosed HIV infection to receive sustained antiretroviral therapy, and 95% of all people receiving antiretroviral therapy to have viral suppression by 2025. Adopted by United Nations Member states in June 2021 as part of the new Political Declaration on HIV and AIDS, these targets, combined with ambitious primary prevention targets and focused attenti… Show more

“…The UNAIDS 2020 “90-90-90” target has been a driving force behind the scale-up of effective HIV treatment, thus reducing onward transmission of HIV [ 18 ]. The implementation of HIV treatment services needs to address all the complexity of the diversity of the 37.7 million people estimated to be living with HIV in 2020 [ 19 ]. However, the success of the 90-90-90 treatment target arises both from the immediacy of saving lives by treating people living with HIV but also from the conceptual simplicity that every one of the 37.7 million people living with HIV needs to be diagnosed and linked to highly effective treatment.…”

“…In 2020, the Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS launched another ambitious 95‐95‐95 project to be achieved by 2030 163 . Nevertheless, despite these efforts and substantial improvements, numerous countries are still far from meeting the current target of the Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS 162,164 . Moreover, although the first clinical trial of an HIV vaccine candidate was launched in 1987, and over $16 billion was spent on vaccine research and development between 2000 and 2020, 165,166 no preventative vaccine against HIV has been approved by the end of 2022.…”

“…The UNAIDS targets for 2025, which were amended in December 2020, called for 95 percent of individuals living with HIV to know their status, 95 percent of those who knew their status to be on treatment, and 95 percent of those on treatment to have viral suppression [70][71]. The HIV targets (cascade) has increasingly been used to direct and assess programmes to improve population antiretroviral treatment (ART) coverage, a vital element of treatment prevention strategy [72].…”
