Achieving the 17 Sustainable Development Goals within 9 planetary boundaries

Abstract: Non-technical abstract The world agreed to achieve 17 Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. Nine planetary boundaries set an upper limit to Earth system impacts of human activity in the long run. Conventional efforts to achieve the 14 socio-economic goals will raise pressure on planetary boundaries, moving the world away from the three environmental SDGs. We have created a simple model, Earth3, to measure how much environmental damage follows from achievement of the 14 socio-economic goals, and we propose … Show more

“…The current environmental degradation has reached alarming levels that require urgent action from around the world. This is particularly true in developing countries that have fewer resources to devote to environmental protection policies [1][2][3], starting with those concerning the abatement of harmful emissions [4,5,7]. To this end, the Fast-Start Finance financial mechanism was launched during the 15th Conference of the Parties (COP15) to counter the effects of climate change and promote economic growth in developing countries.…”

“…The current dominant economic system led by developed countries has proven to be no longer sustainable; at least along the social and environmental dimension due to the negative externalities it generates. The anthropogenic activities resulting from this system has contributed to the breaching of several ecological boundaries, in relation to climate change, biodiversity loss, and environmental degradation [1][2][3]. One way to combat the effects of anthropogenic activities on the environment is a greater deployment of renewable energy sources (RESs) and wiser use of natural resources [4][5][6][7][8].…”

“…To adequately address them, judgments must determine contextually and culturally appropriate balances between independently valuable, but often conflicting targets [3]. Simultaneously, policies must ensure global coherence across local and regional actions, so that local efforts do not destructively interfere with each other, nor overstep limitations in the resources of the planet [4]).…”
