Achieving sustainable development goals: predicaments and strategies

Abstract: The ambitious United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) have been criticized for being universal, broadly framed, inconsistent and difficult to quantify, implement and monitor. We contribute by quantifying and prioritising the SDGs and their impact on sustainable development. We employ structural equation models (SEM) to investigate, which of the underlying pillars of SDGs (economic, social and environment) are the most effective in achieving sustainable development. Our results reveal that the devel… Show more

“…One method quantifies interactions between SDGs using public statistics (e.g. Spaiser et al 2017;Allen et al 2019;Bali Swain and Yang-Wallentin 2020). Another method qualitatively maps and scores the strength of positive, neutral, and negative SDG interactions in different contexts (e.g.…”

“…Hence, Table 4 shows what we consider as the most important variables from articles written by the 12 most prolific authors on the topic of management of industrial processes for a sustainable society during the period 1988-2019. It is noteworthy to mention that seven authors in this ranking are European: Germany (3), Italy (2), and the United Kingdom (1), and 2 North Americans: the United States (1), and Canada (1).…”

“…There is a lot of pressure exerted on development and environment by increasing population growth estimated to be around 9.2 billion by end of 2050 (Mueller, 2008). There are also structural challenges connected to the SDG framework, that it is too ambitious, universal, and expansive, with potential inconsistences, particularly between the socio-economic development and environmental sustainability (Stern et al, 1996;Redclift, 2005;UN SDSN 2015;ICSU & ISSC 2015;Easterly, 2015;Spaiser et al, 2016). Swain and Wallentin, (2020) argue that these challenges are akin to a quagmire of conceptual and quantification problems and extraction of a measure of sustainable development.…”
