Achieving room-temperature brittle-to-ductile transition in ultrafine layered Fe-Al alloys

Abstract: Fe-Al compounds are of interest due to their combination of light weight, high strength, and wear and corrosion resistance, but new forms that are also ductile are needed for their widespread use. The challenge in developing Fe-Al compositions that are both lightweight and ductile lies in the intrinsic tradeoff between Al concentration and brittle-to-ductile transition temperature. Here, we show that a room-temperature, ductile-like response can be attained in a FeAl/FeAl2 layered composite. Transmission elect… Show more

“…The very early stage of thermally-activated ordering is referred to as chemical shortrange order (CSRO) [13][14][15] , the occurrence of which has been reported to significantly change the mechanical [4][5][6][16][17][18][19][20][21] and functional 1,2,22 performances of materials. Fe-Al alloys, lightweight materials with excellent strength and corrosion/wear resistance, are good candidates for theoretical studies on such ordering transformations 2,23,24 . Undeformed Fe-Al alloys with compositions close to the boundary of the disorder-order transition, annealed at a relatively low temperature (e.g.…”

“…In 2019, Chang'E-4 (CE-4) landed on the eastern floor of Von Kármán crater on the far side of the moon. The Yutu-2 rover of CE-4 mission carried an LPR with the same configuration as CE-3 (e.g., Li et al 2020;Lai et al 2019;Ding et al 2020). The LPR is an ultra-wideband carrier-free pulse radar with two channels.…”

“…The LPR is an ultra-wideband carrier-free pulse radar with two channels. The first channel installed on the back of the rover operates at a center frequency of 60 MHz with a bandwidth of 40 MHz, while the second channel installed on the underside of the rover works at a center frequency of 500 MHz with a bandwidth of 500 MHz (Zhang et al 2014;Li et al 2020).…”
