“…Gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) are highly luminescent. Wang et al (2018 ) enhanced their water solubility by complexing it with β-CD. The size of the β-CD-modified AuNCs measured using the high-resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM) was around 3.14 nm.…”

“…Ultrafine metal nanoclusters (AgNCs and AuNCs, etc.) with excellent luminescence properties exhibit outstanding performance in analyzing, sensing, and bioimaging. AuNCs stand out in bioimaging on account of their high biocompatibility, excellent photostability, and large Stokes shift. However, the luminescent quantum yield (QY) of AuNCs is generally lower than that of quantum dots and organic dyes. To date, there are still few reports on AuNCs with QY over 20% in aqueous solution, which severely limits their applicability in bioimaging and luminescence detection. In view of this, several strategies such as doping with metal ions (Ag and Cu), host–guest assembly, and embedding in polymer matrixes , have been adopted to enhance luminescent performances. Among them, the host–guest assembly strategy is an effective and simple measure to suppress the nonradiative transitions of AuNCs via multiple noncovalent interactions between the rigid host macrocycles and the surface ligands of AuNCs.…”

“…Gold nanoclusters with small diameters and aggregated AuNP have also found to be luminescent in nature (Gan et al, 2016;Goswami et al, 2016;Saini et al, 2017;J. Wang et al, 2018a;Y. Wang et al, 2018b;Wu et al, 2019).…”
