The study investigated spatial pattern of residents' response to the fear of crime in Osogbo Local Government Area, Osun State, Nigeria. Primary data was collected by stratifying the Osogbo into three residential neighborhoods, namely; core, transition, and suburban areas. Systematic sampling was used in selecting 112 respondents across residential neighborhoods. The level of Crime Occurrence Index (LCOI) in the core area was 5.03 while 5.90 and 5.31 were indices for transition and suburban areas. The study recorded that religion, police patrol, lightning, membership/ support of vigilante and use of joint community responses were the commonly used strategy in responding to fear of crime while insurance scheme, burglary alarm system, closed-circuit television (CCTV), and surveillance camera were the least strategies used in responding to fear of crime in the study area. The study concludes that there is a significant difference in the responses of residents to fear of crime in the various residential neighborhoods. Dünyada ve Türkiye'de şehirlerde suç kaynaklı güvenlik sorunu çözülmesi gereken öncelikli sorunlar arasında yer almaktadır. Kent güvenliğinin sağlanmasında suç ile ilgili kurulan teorik modeller kamu yöneticileri için önemli politika araçları olarak kullanılabilir. Kent güvenliği politikalarının oluşturulmasında farklı suç teorileri üretildikleri disiplinlere göre çeşitlenen değişik suç önleme yaklaşımları sunmaktadır. Suçun mekânsal dağılımındaki faktörleri inceleyen yaklaşımlar arasında yer alan "Kırık Pencereler Teorisi" literatürde de karşımıza çıkan ve geliştirilmesinde New York'ta başarılı bir uygulamanın sebep olduğu bir teoridir. Bu nedenle bu çalışmada Kırık Pencereler Teorisi'nin İstanbul'da kent güvenliğinin sağlanması için uygun bir teori olup olmadığı test edilmiştir. Kırık Pencereler Teorisi gerek sosyal gerekse de fiziksel yapıya ilişkin faktörleri suç önleme amaçlı olarak kullanması nedeniyle de önemlidir. Kırık Pencereler Teorisi'ne ilişkin kavramlar "Kırık Pencereler Döngüsü" adı altında şematize edilerek modellenmiştir. Bu modelin test edilmesi için path analizi kullanılmıştır. Path analizi modelde belirlenen ilişkilerin test edilmesine olanak sağlamaktadır. Path analizi modelde belirtilen ilişkiler çalışma alanında toplanan veriye mükemmel uyum sağlamadığı durumlarda bu ilişkilerin yerine alternatif teorik olarak kabul edilebilir yeni ilişkiler tanımlanmasına olanak sağlamaktadır. Böylelikle var olan teorik model modifikasyonlarla çalışma alanına uygun hale getirilebilmektedir. Kırık Pencereler Modeli'nin testi için İstanbul'da kentsel alanda yaşayan 1837 bireyle yüz yüze anket görüşmeleri gerçekleştirilmiştir. Bu örneklem büyüklüğüne ait hata payı ±%2.29'dur. Path analizi sonucunda Kırık Pencereler Döngüsü'nün tanımladığı faktörler arasındaki ilişkiler modifiye edilerek İstanbul için geçerli bir model olarak kullanılabileceği tespit edilmiştir.

The desire for security has continued to receive research attention globally. One of the critical aspects has been on how best to secure lives and property in residential neighbourhood in urban areas in the Global south. Although several approaches have been identified on how best to secure the home environment, less research attention has been given to the how maintenance practices can enhance security of lives and property in mass housing environments. This study investigated the influence of building maintenance practices on security of lives and property, using the Lagos State Development and Property Corporation (LSDPC) housing estates as case study. Household survey involving 1036 residents in 14 housing estates was conducted in the study area using questionnaire as the data collection instrument. The data were analysed using descriptive statistics and categorical regression analysis. The result shows that spaces and components of the buildings under the control of individuals and/or households were more frequently maintained than those jointly used spaces. The pruning of flowers and trees, replacement of damaged doors in the buildings and sweeping of open spaces emerged as the top three maintenance practices with the most significant influence on the residents’ perception of security of lives and property in the estates. The study implies that maintenance activities should be focused on these three aspects with more attention given to jointly owned and used spaces and facilities if security of lives and property is to be achieved in mass housing environments.
