Achievement involvement and stress coping in elite wrestling

Abstract: The present study explored the relationship between task involvement and coping with stress in elite competition. Participants were 82 elite wrestlers, both male (n=60) and female (n= 22) from four different European countries, age 16-37. The data for the study were gathered over an 18-month period, and both qualitative in-depth interviews (n=6) and quantitative approaches were used. The quantitative study measured motivation from an Achievement Goal Theory (AGT) perspective: achievement goal orientation (Perc… Show more

“…Seven of the 34 studies listed in Table 3 [79,80,85,92,[94][95][96] referred to Carver et al [10] to justify the use of their factor structure, and two [89,92] to Carver [1]. Four studies [88,91,97,98] provided some general theoretical or practical considerations, and eight studies [81,93,[99][100][101][102][103][104] did not provide any justification or reference.…”

“…Compared to the studies that had conducted their own exploratory factor analyses, those that based their factor structure on previous research tended to have smaller samples sizes. Of the 34 studies listed in Table 3, 14 studies had a sample size of less than 100 [77][78][79][80][81][82][83][84][85][86][87][88][89][90]. Some of the studies had more than 300 participants [91][92][93], where a factor analysis would have been supported by a sufficiently large sample size.…”

“…This is a well known phenomenon across sport disciplines relative to both gender and age, and which has been widely explored by sport psychologists (e.g. Crocker, Hoar, McDonough, Kowalski & Niefer, 2004;Goyen & Anshel, 1998;Kristiansen, Roberts & Abrahamsen 2008). One of the interviewees said: 'I don't like it, because I stress so much and I don't like the feeling.…”

“…Our results are similar to those published in the study by Nicolas, Gaudreau, and Franche (2011), who asserts that task-oriented coping strategies is an important process by which the Perceived support coaching has an influence on athletes during a specific competition. Similarly for Kristiansen et al (2008), in elite athletes in four different European countries.…”
